This past weekend, a friend and I chose to take a quick getaway to Omaha, Nebraska. We loaded up her SUV and headed north with only one rule: eat local.
While I’m not actually a vegan, I love including vegan meals in my diet and I knew I wanted to try a few vegan options while I was there. If you trust my photos, you’ll see that they didn’t disappoint.

Up first is a popular breakfast spot in Omaha’s Midtown that’s apparently adored by locals. They’re open from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wednesday thru Sunday. We arrived around 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning and there was already a 30 minute wait to be seated. Shortly after we arrived, the wait grew to about an hour. Needless to say, we had high expectations.
If you’re going with a group of friends, SCBC is great because it’s not a vegan restaurant, but it offers a couple of vegan options.
I ordered the Banana Bread French Toast. It was topped with bananas, strawberries, blackberries, candied pecans, powdered sugar, and whipped coconut for the whipped cream. This dish was delicious and not your average french toast. The edges had a bit of a crunch, but the inside was soft and moist.
I worried that the serving size wouldn’t be enough so I ordered a side of hash browns. They were bland and greasy so I wouldn’t order them again, but fortunately, the three banana bread slices were more than enough. My grand total: $15.38.
If you’re COVID conscious (like me), it’s important to note that the waitresses wear masks and they weren’t seating every area. There’s also outside seating.
My best advice is to get there early! When our table was available, we were told they were waiting to seat us so the kitchen could catch up. (I’d never heard that reasoning before.) I also overheard some frustrated customers complaining about the wait for their to-go food.

If you end up waiting, they offer free cups of coffee and you may as well checkout the menu before you’re seated. Just scan the QR code provided or go to their website.
I’ve only eaten at Modern Love Omaha one time, but it already has a special place in my heart. It describes its menu items as “swanky vegan comfort food in Midtown Omaha.” I don’t know about the swanky part, but the food was delicious and definitely made me comfortable during the ride back to Kansas City.

I ordered the Nachos Molo (gf). For $12.50, these nachos came packed with walnut chorizo, cashew queso, pico de gallo, guacamole, pickled red onions, pickled jalapeños, hot sauce, cilantro, and warm chips. I’ve had vegan nachos from two other restaurants (in Kansas City) and these easily make the top of the list. The serving size was great for the price and I loved the way those flavors worked together.
It’s important to note that unlike most people, when I eat vegan food, I don’t expect it to be comparable to non-vegan food. For example, I didn’t expect the cashew queso to taste like cheese… and it didn’t. It was more of a thick sauce. I say this to say — if you’re not vegan, order this dish with an open mind. It was my favorite meal during our weekend in Omaha, but if you’re expecting movie theater cheese sauce, you’ll be disappointed every time.
Unlike SCBC, you cannot eat inside Modern Love Omaha. I placed my order online and picked it up outside the door. The restaurant has signs that tell you not to enter and they request that you call the number on the window when you arrive. My wait was about 35 minutes on a Sunday afternoon.
